I don’t know about you but I am having a hard time believing it is August!  For me and for many of you that means it’s the back to school time of year.  Change can feel a little overwhelming for students, parents, and teachers.  I like to think of it as a time of new beginnings.  The first week of August is National Simplify your life week (who knew) so I thought it would be a great chance to share a few tips that help me this time of year.

1. Let Your Electronics Help You

I spent about an hour this week looking at planners online.  Every year I feel the need to buy a calendar that I use for a month or two and then it eventually winds up on a shelf or in the trash.  Google Calendar makes my life so much easier.  I love that I can add my work calendar, my personal calendar, and my family calendar all in the same place and because I can access it on my phone and my laptop so it is always with me.  Here are a few of my tricks:

Birthdays:  Set to repeat annually when you enter it onto your calendar and set 2 notifications.  The first notification 1 week before so there is time to buy and mail a card and the second notification the day of at a time that will be convenient to call.  Depending on the person I set it either for first thing in the morning or in the evening.

Events: Color code events in different colors.  My school events are in green, personal events are pink, Taylor’s events are teal…you get the picture.  I know Type-A! I share events with anyone who will be attending so that it is easy for them to add to their calendar too.

To Do List: I use the list app on my phone for anything I need to pick up outside of work and use the task portion of Google Calendar for tasks that are work related.  If you still like the feeling of having a paper list you can print this section of your calendar.

2. Lay Out Your Clothes the Night Before

This is probably the easiest routine that makes mornings so much easier around my house in the morning.  It is so much easier to check the weather and make sure I feel comfortable in my work clothes choice if I pick them out and hang them up the night before.  I mentioned in another post that I ditched my iron and steamer years ago once I discovered wrinkle releaser.  If I wait to spray my clothes with wrinkle releaser in the morning they are often damp when I put them on…not the best feeling.

3. Meal Plan & Prep

Whether you choose to prep your meals weekly or daily, prepping your breakfast and lunch the night before makes eating healthy easier.  I usually have a protein shake with frozen fruit mixed in for breakfast, pack a healthy snack (nonfat greek yogurt, fruit, vegetables, and/or a protein bar), and salad and protein shake for lunch.

I prefer to have salmon or a chicken breast for dinner with vegetables.  I have found that when cooking for 1-2 people the pre-prepped meals that are fresh from HEB are great because everything is already prepped and measured.

4. Exercise in the Morning

This is a personal preference.  I don’t know about you but I often find myself more likely to miss a workout if I save it for when I get home in the evening.  Truthfully, I am tired!  Also 30 minutes of yoga in the morning not only feels good physically but helps me feel relaxed and focused.   If you have to be at work at 7 like I do this may not sound so appealing especially if you work out at the gym.  I would definitely work out in the afternoon if I wasn’t able to yoga at home.

5.  It’s Okay to Say No

This is a big one.  Giving yourself permission to say no to things is a hard one especially if you are a people pleaser.  It’s so important to have time for yourself and to enjoy each day fully.  Saying yes to too many things can cause stress and feeling just plain exhausted.  Remember that taking care of yourself and your family are most important.

What tips do you have to simplify your life?  I would love to hear your suggestions!
